News Web (Text and photo by Chen Bo from Environment and Food Engineering School) On October 21-22, the 9^th Guangxi College Student Chemical Experiment Skill Competition 2017 hosted by Guangxi Education Department was held in Guangxi Teachers Education University. The competition targeted the university and vocational school students of Guangxi and was the chemical experiment skill competition currently with the highest level and the largest participation scale in Guangxi. There were 27 colleges of higher education participating in the competition in total, among which there were 18 universities sand 9 vocational colleges. Environment and Food Engineering School of the College dispatched the competition team composed of the leader Chen Bo, the tutor Tan Wenbo, and the students Zhou Yan in agricultural product quality inspection class in Grade 2015, Ren Xiao in food inspection technology class in Grade 2016, Zhang Xi and Zhao Feng in environment engineering technology class in Grade 2016. In the competition, the contestants from the College won the great performance of a first prize, a second prize and a third prize with their good mental quality, solid and skilled professional skills, which also created the best performance of the College in this competition. Mr. Tan Wenbo won the honorable title of “Excellent Tutor”.

In Guangxi College Student Chemical Experiment Skill Competition, all the contestants of university students and vocational school students competed with each other together. Every team was composed of 4 players, who were selected randomly by the organization committee from the 20 players submitted by every school. The competition was composed of two parts, namely theoretical examination and experiment skill competition. Theoretical examination mainly examined relevant chemical experiment theories and laboratory safety knowledge to test the ability of the students to analyze and solve the problems. The experiment skill competition mainly examined the inorganic and analytic chemistry, experiment skill operation of organic chemistry and relevant experiment design. Before the competition, the lots were drawn to determine whether to examine inorganic and analytic chemistry experiment or organic chemistry experiment skill operation for any combination of two students from the team. The chemical experiment skill competition required them to carry out 7-hour operation and calculation, which was a great challenge to the concentration and physical strength of the contestants.

Physical In this competition, the students were working as interns in Dongguan Xufuji Food Co., Ltd when receiving the list of the selected contestants from the organization committee. After receiving the list of the selected contestants from the organization committee, the leader of the College immediately made great efforts to coordinate and allow the contestants to come back to the school successfully during the National Day Holiday and start the training before the competition rapidly. There was great difficulty in competition preparation for the contestants since no clear competition orientation and scope was given before the competition. In the process of training, the students had a lot of knowledge and experiment skills to master. Therefore, the students gave up the National Day holiday, and seized every minute to do the training. The training time per day exceeded 10 hours. In the short period of 20 days, the student accomplished a dozen of experiment operation training and the practice of several thousand exercises. Hard work paid off. The hard training finally brought forth fruitful results.

Environment and Food Engineering School planned ahead for the competition and especially open relevant selective courses in the previous semester to lay a relatively solid foundation for the students in chemical experiment theories and operational skill basics, which was always the reason for the great performance of the students after the training for so short time. The competition mode of this competition could expand the scope of benefit for the students, help the College to deepen the basic teaching and education/teaching reform, promote the training of technical and skilled talents, improve the vocational competency and core employment competitiveness of the students and train qualified talents with high competency for the society.
